Honest Man

Honest Man

As darkness falls, I hear the call to step out in the street
Where men of class and winos pass like wandering ghosts that never meet.
I’m a beggar on this corner. I’m holding out my hand.
So buddy can you help me to find an honest man.

I walk real fast by walls of glass where businessmen make deals.
I’ve seen the ploys of good old boys who’s friendly smiles hide teeth of steel.
I’ve heard their golden offers. I’ve let `em shake my hand.
I found them out, but rarely did I find an honest man.

Music roars through open doors of taverns way downtown
Where barflies buzz the scent of love that’s often offered, seldom found.
I’m hungry like that woman with no ring upon her hand,
Just waiting with a come-on ’till she finds an honest man.

When church bells ring, the faithful sing the Savior on the cross.
Their lives are dressed in Sunday best, so no one knows which sheep are lost.
Well, I could use a savior, but it’s hard to understand
Why this might be the hardest place to find an honest man.

By faded dawn I head for home. The kids are watching T.V.
Their heros fight for truth and right with super powers I can’t believe.
Well, I’m no T.V. hero. It’s hard to take a stand.
So when I fail, I pray that they will find an honest man.
