The Night When The Chameleons Started To Sing

The Night When The Chameleons Started To Sing

Perhaps it was the color of the moon that night
As she peered down on the zoo with a purple-golden light.
All was still and quiet under the watchman’s keep,
But the blue-vermillion glow awoke the animals from sleep.
Something got them wound up tighter than a spring.
That’s when the chameleons started to sing.
A strange unearthly melody went floating through the air
Calling for a harmony from every den and lair.
The night was right for silliness. It swept over the zoo
From parrot perch to penguin pool from cougar to cuckoo.
The watchman, he was sleeping. He didn’t hear a thing
The night when the chameleons started to sing.

Refrain 1:
The lions started chirping, and it made the crickets roar.
Iguanas banged their bongo drums until their tails were sore.
The elephants dug tunnels while the codfish climbed a tree.
The grizzly bears and weasel poured a friendly spot of tea.

The chickadees were arguing. The worms were picking fights.
The whales were dancing on dry land in polka-dotted tights.
Hyenas quit their laughing. They took hankies out and cried.
The clams were playing basketball, but all their games were tied.
The condors beat a rhythm on their bald heads with their wings
The night when the chameleons started to sing.

Refrain 2:
The black and orange tiger took on pink and yellow hues.
The baboons and the monkeys started grinning neon blue.
Reflecting off the dolphin pool you could see the silhouettes
Of rhinos in their tutus practicing pirouettes

The platypus philosophized. The crocodile critiqued.
The panda pondered poetry and tap-dancing technique.
But as the sky got lighter a stillness filled the air.
The chameleons got quieter, and the lion went to his lair.
And by the time the keeper woke you couldn’t hear a thing
The night when the chameleons started to sing.
